Health Education objectives are to identify community needs, enhance existing health promotion efforts, and to provide support, education, training, and resources to meet our community needs.

Traffic Safety Program:  The Tioga County Health Department has a Nationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician on site who can provide one-on-one or group demonstrations about the use/misuse of child restraints (car seats).  The Technician is also permitted to install an approved safety seat in your vehicle, while providing instructions to the parent or caregiver.  There is NO charge for these services.  If you would like to schedule a demonstration or have a child restraint inspected or assistant with the installation please call Tina Slavik at 607-687-8607. 

 

Wellness and Nutrition Programs: Physical Activity and Proper Nutrition are essential to maintain and live a healthy lifestyle.  Simple changes to your daily routine can improve your quality of life and help you sustain healthy habits.   In time these healthy changes will decrease your chances of developing chronic disease in the future.  There are a variety of recourses available at the Health Department to get you moving into a “Healthier Lifestyle”. 

 

Diabetes:  The Southern Tier Diabetes Coalition represents Broome, Chenango, Delaware and Tioga counties. The main objectives of this coalition include raising public awareness about diabetes, pre-diabetes, maintenance, and prevention of the disease and/or the complications caused by diabetes. Simply Health wellness classes and Resources Guides are available by request.

 

Tobacco Control Programs:  Nicotine Replacement Therapy is available for NO charge at the health Department.  Nicotine Gum, Lozenges and Patches are available to those who are ready to make a serious attempt to quit smoking and or using chewing tobacco. 

 

Cancer Services: The Southern Tier Cancer Services Program is a unique collaboration of

government, community-based organizations and health care partners that promote healthy living through outreach, education, and access to services for the purpose of reducing the risk of chronic disease. The New York State Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)

provides funding for local community health care practitioners to offer clinical breast exams, mammograms, Pap tests, colorectal screenings, and limited follow-up. These screening procedures are for income eligible women and men who are uninsured or underinsured. The Southern Tier

Cancer Services Program is comprised of more than 100 providers in the counties of Broome, Chenango, and Tioga. Increasing access to health care providers is an essential component in the success of the partnership. This program is an early detection and education program, and as such, does not enroll symptomatic patients or reimburse for any treatment services provided.

Disease Prevention:  The Tioga County Health Department is part of the Central New York Region HIV / AIDS Care Network (CNY HIV Care Network). `The Network was established in 1991 to promote collaboration among those living with and responding to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Central New York.  The Network now serves as a 14 county region, which is made up of,  HIV/AIDS health care, social services providers, community-based support organizations, and volunteers.  Person infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS are also members of the Network.  The CNY Network is one of eleven in New York State funded by the Bureau of Community Support Services (BCSS), NYSDOH AIDS Institute from funds provided by the Ryan White HIV Modernization Act of 2006. 

         

Tioga County Health Department Newsletter:  Another way to stay educated is by our Community Newsletter that is distributed throughout Tioga County.  This newsletter educates the public on various health issues and updates Tioga residents on what programs are offered by the Tioga County Health Department.  Look for a copy in your local Grocery store.
