Apalachin Pharmacy Gets New Medication Drop Box

Last Updated: 7/17/2018

Tioga County Public Health recognizes Apalachin Pharmacy for becoming a new Medication Drop Box location in Tioga County. They are one of 172 pharmacies statewide participating in the second round of New York State’s Pilot Drug Take Back Program.

Medication drop boxes are a safe way for individuals to dispose of expired, unused, or unwanted medications like antibiotics, contraceptives, prescription painkillers, and over-the-counter medicine. These drop boxes help keep the community and environment safe.

Individuals often think that flushing their medicine is a safe disposal option, however, flushed medications have been found in New York lakes, rivers and streams. This can lead to adverse effects on fish, amphibians, and other aquatic life, along with the development of drug-resistant bacteria.

Using these medication drop boxes can also help prevent unused medicine from getting into the wrong hands. The opioid epidemic continues to have a huge impact in the Southern Tier. Prescription opiates can become addictive in as little as a week. Kylie Holochak reminds the public that “disposing of unused opiates can help prevent those who may be experimenting with drugs from starting down a long road of addiction.”

The Apalachin Pharmacy is located at 6843 State Route 434 in Apalachin, NY, and their medication drop box can be accessed during regular business hours. Check out the “Medication Drop Boxes, Sharp Disposals & Narcan Suppliers” map at for additional resources in Tioga County and surrounding areas.
