Tioga County Ranks 40th in County Health Rankings Report for 2018

Last Updated: 3/21/2018

County Health Rankings were established to help counties across the country know how they are preforming in health status for their state and what influences the health of the residents. Tioga County Public Health is continuously trying to improve the overall health of our county; there are still areas for improvement. For 2018, Tioga County ranked 40 out of 62 counties in New York State for Health Outcomes.

There have been some notable improvements this past year. There was a decrease in the percentage of unemployed adults (5.1%), a decrease in youth (3%) and adults (7%) who are without health insurance, and a decrease in teen birth rates (26 per 1,000, 15 -19 year olds). There was also a decrease in driving deaths related to alcohol impairment. Tioga County continues to fall below the statewide average of children living in poverty; but 49% of children in the county are on free or reduced lunch.

Tioga County continues to target areas for improvement. Poor health behaviors put our residents at-risk. Adult obesity (30%) continues to be an area of focus. The rankings also show that our county has seen a slight increase in adult smokers (17%). Positive health habits like nutritious eating habits, plenty of sleep and routine physical activity are the most effective ways to health!

Substance abuse continues to be a huge area of concern, with a Drug Overdose Death Rate of 21 (per 100,000 individuals). “While our Health Rankings have been affected by substance abuse related issues, as a county we have mobilized our resources and are involving the community toward addressing this problem. Our outreach efforts will certainly have a positive impact on the health of Tioga County residents,” said Legislator Chair Martha Sauerbery.

The County Health Rankings give Tioga County Public Health a chance to address areas of concern and reach out to the public to raise awareness of our top health priority areas. Tioga County Public Health continues to participate in community coalitions including Tobacco Free Broome and Tioga, Tioga County Allies in Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP), Anti-Hunger Task Force, Tioga Teens & Families, and the Family Enrichment Health Advisory Committee. Through these partnerships, we hope to continue educating and positively affecting the health of our county.
