Town
and Village of Nichols
The Town of Nichols consists of 33.7 square miles and is located
between the Susquehanna River to the north and west, the Town of
Owego to the east, and Bradford County, Pennsylvania to the south.
According to the 2000 Census the population is 2,584 people. As of March 2003, the Town's major employer became the Best Buy Warehouse
and Distribution Center in the hamlet of Lounsbury. Agriculture
and tourism are the other major industries in the Town. The
Tioga Country Club is a public golf course that offers spectacular
views of the Susquehanna River Valley. Tioga Downs Casino, located along I-86, offers harness racing and video gaming.
The Village of Nichols consists of .51 square miles within the
Town and has a population of 574 according to the 2000 Census. The
main intersection in the Village is the County road known as River
Road and NYS Route 282, which lead to Pennsylvania. The Cady Library
located on River Road is a significant architectural treasure that
has been transformed from a turn-of-the-century residential mansion
to a first-class library facility. Village-owned Kirby Park offers
residents a community park for all types of recreational activities
and has recently been the host for the Annual Tioga County Antique
Tractor Show. The Barstow House Restaurant, built in 1823 and beautifully restored in 1986, offers some of the best food to be found in Tioga County.
