Town
and Village of Owego
The Town of Owego consists of 104.17 square miles and is located
in the southeast corner of Tioga County. Owego borders the Town
of Tioga to the west, the Town of Newark Valley to the north, Broome
County to the east, and Bradford County, Pennsylvania to the south.
The Susquehanna River bisects the Town flowing east to west. Hiawatha
Island located in the center of the river across from the Town-owned
Hickories Park was the location of the peace conference that founded
the Iroquois Confederation in the 1400's and later the home of a
young John D. Rockefeller. The 2000 Census listed the Town's population
as 20,365. The major employers in the Town are Lockheed Martin Systems
Integration, Sanmina Corporation, Ensco, Inc., and the Tioga County
Government. The Campville, Crestview Heights, and Apalachin areas
of the Town have a suburban character with much of the area residents
gravitating toward the triple cities of Binghamton, Johnson City,
and Endicott in Broome County.
The Village of Owego is located within the Town and consists of
a 2.5 square mile area. The Village is the County Seat of Tioga
County and has a population of 3,911 according to the 2000 Census.
The Village's major employers are the Tioga County Government and
the Owego-Apalachin School system. The Village's central business
district will soon be showcased with a new bridge across the Susquehanna
River leading to the 1879 Tioga County Courthouse and quaint shops
along Riverow and Lake Street that offer unique gifts, arts and
crafts, as well as moderately priced restaurants.
