Town
and Village of Spencer
The Town of Spencer consists of 49.56 square miles and is bordered
by Chemung County to the west, Tompkins County to the north, the
Town of Candor to the east, and the Town of Barton to the south.
According to the 2000 Census the Town had a population of 2,979.
The Town is primarily agricultural land and, like the Town of Candor,
many people gravitate towards Ithaca and are employed by Cornell
University. Spencer enjoys a special relationship with nearby Van
Etten in Chemung County, which has been strengthened by the bond
formed under the Spencer-Van Etten School system.
The Village of Spencer consists of 1.03 square miles within the
Town and has a population of 731 according to the 2000 Census. NYS
Routes 96 and 34 merge in the center of the Village at Tioga State
Bank's headquarters. The Village hosts the Annual Spencer Picnic
every year in August and Nichols Pond provides a quaint natural
setting in the Village center. The new Main Street Café on
Route 96 provides a little bit of Ithaca's atmosphere with great
food in a turn-of-the-century restored storefront. For dessert there's
nothing better than an ice cream sundae on a warm summer night at
R.V.'s near the Town Hall.
