Office of the Legislative Chair

For Immediate Release:

August 4, 2017

In Honor of the 100th Anniversary of Women's Right to Vote in New York State, the Tioga Women's Suffrage Committee invites the community to celebrate with a tour of the Historic Tioga County Courthouse in Owego, N.Y. on August 19th from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm.

The event will commemorate the struggle and achievement of the Women's Suffrage movement and honor the women and men who sacrificed and fought for the right to vote. New York State has a storied history in the Suffrage movement, and Tioga County was the site of numerous Suffrage groups and events.

With this celebration we will open the Court House to the public to enjoy tours, period exhibits and music of the time. An official program will begin at 2:30 featuring speakers including a very special guest from the past. Susan B. Anthony will share her stories of her friendship with local resident Elizabeth Chatfield of Owego and talk about her experiences in the Suffrage movement. During the day there will be activities on the Court House Lawn for families to enjoy including, refreshments, music and a Suffrage photo cutout.

Tioga County has been celebrating this historic anniversary all year using Suffrage colors with bunting for buildings and flower plantings across the county. Residents have celebrated by dressing in period clothing and participating in local parades. The Waverly Historic Society held a Suffrage walking tour and Tea and recently Emma Sedore our County Historian, hosted a ceremony dedicating a historic marker at the former Owego home of Elizabeth Chatfield a local Suffrage Activists. Coming up in October will be a re-enactment of a Suffrage parade at the Newark Valley Apple Festival.

The Tioga Suffrage Celebration will be the showcase event of the year-long celebration. We would be very pleased to have you attend our event and participate in the program on this important anniversary in New York State.
