January is Radon Action Month

Last Updated: 1/18/2019

Did you know that Tioga County has some of the highest levels of radon across New York State? It is estimated that around 54% of the homes in Tioga County have elevated levels of radon, leaving those families at risk.

But what is radon? Radon is an odorless, tasteless, and invisible gas that is produced by the natural decay of uranium and is found in nearly all soils. If radon is present in the ground below a home, the gas can get into the home through cracks in the foundation.

Being exposed to radon over a long period of time can increase ones risk for developing lung cancer. Radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths in non-smokers, killing around 21,000 Americans each year. This is especially of concern during the winter months when homes have a lack of airflow with nowhere for the radon to go.

Todd Kopalek, Supervising Public Health Sanitarian encourages Tioga County residents, “if you are unsure about your home’s radon levels, now is the best time to test. Test results are most accurate when your home is sealed up and outside airflow cannot skew the results.”

Tioga County Public Health has FREE radon testing available through our Healthy Neighborhoods Program. There are no income requirements to have a radon test done. To schedule your free radon test, call 607-687-8600!
