Redistricting in Progress for Tioga County

Last Updated: 12/13/2021

The Tioga County Redistricting Committee, with bipartisan representation, is in the process of revising county legislative district and election district boundaries. Based on population shifts identified by 2020 Census data, our legislative district boundaries must be modified in order to comply with redistricting laws. Election district boundaries must also be modified to conform with new legislative district lines. Recent legislative changes allow for an increase in the number of registered voters permitted within a single election district. Therefore, election districts may also increase in size, reducing the total number of election districts in the county. This will alleviate the insufficient quantity of election day workers in Tioga County.

The Redistricting Committee will present new legislative district map options to the County Legislature at the December 14th Legal meeting. Election districts will be revised following initial approval of the new legislative districts. The Redistricting Committee aims to introduce a local law approving the new boundaries in January. However, barring any legislative changes, if the county district maps are not approved with enough time before the designating petition period begins (TBD, could be late February or early March), the current maps will be used for 2022 local elections and the new maps will be implemented in 2023.

An interactive map of the proposed district lines can be viewed HERE.
